Gallery hosts new exhibit in time for Mother's Day weekend

Two Oklahoma City artists are opening a new installation over Mother's Day weekend at Istvan Gallery, 1218 N. Western.

Suzanne King Randall and Jennifer Barron are holding an artists' reception 6 p.m. Friday "? and an open house 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday "? to celebrate the opening of their new exhibit. The reception is free and includes drinks and hors d'oeuvres.

Stephen Kovash, Istvan Gallery owner and curator, said the exhibit features an established artist, Randall, and one up-and-coming, Barron.

"Randall has been painting and teaching around town for years," Kovash said. "Jennifer Barron is a younger artist just on the verge of not really being emerging anymore. She's starting to really get out there."

Randall uses different canvases to create mixed-media pieces that look similar to curtains or sheaths, but with large designs and intricate colors. Barron uses acrylic to create hyper-realistic images that look almost like photographs when viewed from a distance.

"Suzanne's work is very abstract, and she paints these really bold designs on these pieces of material and then forms them," Kovash said. "Jennifer takes these mundane objects like parking meters, forks or cracks in the cement and makes really neat statements about the items with her use of color and paint strokes."

Istvan Gallery is located inside Urban Art, which also houses the Blue Sage glass-blowing studio and Art Fusion fused-glass studio. Glass blowers will perform and demonstrate techniques throughout the weekend to celebrate the opening.
