Tammy Weiss, co-owner and executive chef of Othello’s Italian Restaurant in Edmond and Norman, was one of 60 chefs to battle it out in the traditional category of the International Pizza Expo, held March 19-21 in Las Vegas.

“It was exhilarating,” she said. “It was like one of those food challenges with judges and hundreds of people there.”

For the challenge, Weiss prepared one of Othello’s most popular pies, the Murcer Pizza, which was created by former New York Yankees great and Oklahoma City native, the late Bobby Murcer. His eponymous pie is cooked crispy and features two signature toppings: deep-fried pepperonis and grilled onions.

As one of the few rookies in the contest, Weiss admitted she was nervous before the competition.

“It was just a really neat feeling going up against them,” she said. “We were up against the best.”

After watching other accomplished chefs at work, Weiss said she acquired new skills that she might incorporate into Othello’s menu. And she’s already geared up for a rematch.

“I will be signing up for next year and hopefully getting in again,” she said. “I am looking forward to it.”
