Gerry Bonds invites you into ‘The Living Room’

Bonds, who anchored the nightly news broadcast on OETA for 14 years, hopes to bring intellectually stimulating conversations to the round table as she talks to Janet Barresi, state superintendent of public instruction, and two representatives from Teach for America about the state of education.

“On a personal level, it’s the intellectual stimulation and the knowledge that I’m really doing something that I think is worthwhile for our listening audience,” Bonds said. “On a broader level, I feel really good about maybe filling a need in the community for this kind of in-depth conversation.”

The show has seen help from sponsors such as Devon Energy and Cole & Reed P.C., and is slated to run once a month for a year. Bonds hopes the show it will run more frequently than monthly if it does well.

Her show will focus on a different theme each program. Immigration and a group of women in Oklahoma bridging the gap between Muslims and Christians are possible topics for future shows.

The name of the show came from Bonds’ hope to make her guests feel as though they relaxed and comfortable in her living room. But she also has another reason for choosing the name.

“It’s the living room in a sense that it’s the living room in your home, but it’s also the living room, a room that lives because it’s full of ideas and sparks interest and action,” Bonds said.

The next show will air at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, 4:30 p.m. Saturday and at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
