Girlie action

Since its inception in 2004, The Girlie Show has done nothing but gain momentum, so much so that the event spread across two days starting in 2006. Five years later, the show has become an establishment of the Oklahoma City art scene.

This year, the two-day soiree commences 7 p.m. Friday at the Farmers Public Market, and noon Saturday.

Spurred out of necessity, the growth even surprised the original girlies, Dawn Tyler-Harth, Erin Merryweather and Marilyn Artus.

“We all three made products ourselves and needed a place to showcase them,” said Tyler-Harth.

The trio realized the community’s need for an alternative art space geared toward the unique, quality, creative and rule-breaking concepts under which a wealth of artists establish themselves.

They tapped into an undiscovered, diverse community of female artists who needed help parlaying their work to the art-hungry.

“It’s neat to watch first-time artists realize people want to pay money for their work,” said Tyler-Harth.

The juried show’s playful, festive ambience adds to the comfort level of current and emerging artists, so when visitors show up, they should get ready to mingle.

This year, attendees can expect 43 fabulous femme artists; delicious food from favorite metro eateries; live local tunes from Local Honey, Jane Mays, The Ruskettes, DJ Ostara and Kelly Trance; and live dancing by Teaze Dance Showgirls and Aalim Bellydancers.

Proceeds fund a scholarship program for one lucky, up-and-coming female student artist (details for scholarship application at thegirlieshow.net), as well as creating next year’s showcase.

Although the event has grown to meet demand, Tyler-Harth promised, “We’ll always be true to the original intent. Everything is 100 percent handmade by the artists.”
