'Great' looks

Directed by Moulin Rouge’s Baz Luhrmann, the brand-new film version of the literary classic has an all-star cast, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and Isla Fisher. Its soundtrack boasts Jay- Z, Beyonce, Florence + the Machine and The xx. I have to say, I think Fitzgerald would be quite proud.

Amid the hoopla over the movie, it’s easy to overlook it being set in one of America’s most glamorous and racy era: the Roaring ’20s.

The 1920s were an incredible period for fashion. It was the first time women and men abandoned full-on dress wear and escaped to attire that was more practical or flashy. An abundance of boxy hats, fur warps and flapper dresses marked the era. If you’re aiming to recreate the look, start with the head. Hats were a large part of the decade, and the boxier, the better. The cloche, a tight hat with small rim, paired nicely with the popular women’s haircut of the time, the bob. Headbands were also a hallmark of women’s fashion.

Finding hats can be tricky, however, since most that truly fit the style are usually found by chance at estate sales or vintage shops.

However, try out Francesca’s Collections at Penn Square Mall (1901 Northwest Expressway; 842- 8163) or, if you want something unique, head to Collectibles Etc. (1511 N. Meridian; 524-1700).

The latter, a lovely shop owned and operated by Gwin Mullins, has a milliner on hand, along with vintage finds — and brand-new ones, too.

Consider a fur (or faux fur) or lace wrap, the perfect glam touch to any Jazz Age-inspired ensemble at David’s Bridal (13740 N. Pennsylvania; 302- 0451). Also worth mentioning are the veils and jewelry in the store. A
few dresses are even fashioned after some of the looks in Gatsby.

If you don’t want a wedding dress and you’ve not been lucky with flapper finds at vintage shops and estate sales, a dress is possibly the trickiest bit to completing your look. Unless you go to Costume Fun House (4917 N.W. 23rd; 947-5736), where it’s as easy as smooth jazz on a cool night.

With hundreds of styles and colors to choose from — complete with flapper feather headbands, pearls, feather boas, cigarette extenders and shoes — a girl could get fixed right up in no time. All dresses can be tailored to fit, as well.

Whether you’re changing up your everyday look or attending a fabulous Gatsby-themed party, now you can look the part. Let’s shop, OKC!
