Have an inkling

Once you decide on the reflection of your personal tastes and how you want to brand yourself, it’s time to embark on the journey of putting it all together, whether that’s specific clothing, a hairstyle, accessories or using your body as an artistic canvas.

When you’re considering the addition of a permanent piece to your wardrobe and skin, obviously there is one thing you should consider above all else: quality.

When I spoke with Chad Miller at Hard Luck Tattoo (2410 N. Robinson; 525-5825), he echoed that sentiment wholeheartedly.

“If you’re getting a tattoo, you don’t want to shop around by price,” said Miller.

He said that the majority of the designs his shop does are designed in-house, but they are willing to work with people who come in with a specific idea already sketched.

Most of the pricing is based on size and difficulty, and bigger pieces — back pieces — are by the hour. The shop was clean and well-lit, and from a person who’s never actually been in a tattoo shop, that was a big deal.

If you’re around the Plaza District, you might consider getting inked at No Regrets Tattoo (1712 N.W. 16th; 702-0088).

Situated in the heart of the district, this parlor is sandwiched between a pet shop and a retro furniture store, across the street from Saints. Be sure you make an appointment with these guys, however, because they keep hours all over the board.

To the north, you’ll find Altered Images (12325 N. May; 751-7060), which is one of three
locations across Oklahoma and Texas. Here, you’ll find friendly tattoo
artists and tons of books with ideas if you’ve not made your mind up.

Hopefully, if you’re getting a tattoo, you’ve made your mind up. If I ever get brave enough, I’d consider doing a cap on my shoulder in leopard print or the words “In vino veritas” down my side. Again, that’s if I ever get brave enough!

The most important thing in the world of body art is to find an artist’s work you appreciate and trust, and go from there.

Also check to make sure the shop you’re considering complies with Oklahoma Health Department codes. Take your time planning and getting your body ready for its permanent work of art. Let’s shop, OKC!
