Individual Artists of Oklahoma Gallery displays pen-and-acrylic work

A television glowing behind her, the silhouette of Matty Lynch's roommate provided all the inspiration he needed.

"She was watching 'ER' and I had a blank canvas I didn't know what to do with," Lynch said, with a laugh.

He added flowing, "tentacle"-styled hair to his roommate's profile before completing the piece several months ago at his Mesta Park home. The finished pen and acrylic work is part of "Project Space," a two-artist exhibition featuring art by Lynch and fellow local artist Harold Nichols. The exhibit is currently on display at the Individual Artists of Oklahoma Gallery, 811 N. Broadway.

APOCALYPTIC
Lynch, 37, said both his and Nichols' exhibit pieces are "apocalyptic" in nature and frequently feature repeating patterns and stenciled designs. He said his canvases generally start with inked sketches and acrylic paint, but that some of his "Project Space" artwork is mixed-media and collage.

Lynch said the metro's art scene "? specifically galleries, artists and events in the Paseo Arts District "? inspired his 2004 move to Oklahoma City from Flint, Mich. Starting with a "base idea," he said his artwork generally moves "in its own direction."

"They just create a life of their own," he said.
