Despite the chilly weather, children can enjoy a newly built playground designed by kids, for kids. Located in the Oklahoma City Boathouse District, the
colorful site was constructed as a way to give those who are too young
to compete in water sports a chance to have fun anyway at the Oklahoma
River.
The playground was designed by Oklahoma City children and, on Nov. 12, built by 299 volunteers from the Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma, national nonprofit KaBOOM! and the greater metro area.
A few months ago, students from Oklahoma City Public Schools and area organizations were invited to participate in “Design Day” to give their opinions on a new playground. They drew pictures of what they wanted it to look like and talked to Oklahoma City Boathouse officials about its best features.
“Basically, taking those pieces and translating them into specific components that mirrored what they’re saying, that’s how the design came about,” said Kelley McGuire, Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation youth outreach director.
Located at the youth pavilion at 725 S. Lincoln, the play place boasts multiple slides, a rock-climbing wall and even an area designed for children with disabilities who may not be able to utilize all of the equipment.
“We wanted to give another demographic of children an opportunity to play and utilize the facilities, especially younger children,” McGuire said.
