Kansas City offers lots to do for weekend getaway

At an easy half-day drive from Oklahoma City, Kansas City is a perfect fall weekend destination.

"The best thing is the fountains," said Kansas City resident Kathryn Young. "We are known as the 'City of Fountains,' and no matter where you walk in the spring, summer or fall, you can hear the sound of running water."

The city's many fountains are framed each autumn with shades of orange, yellow and red painting nearly every street corner.

"Fall is a great time to visit Kansas City with mild temperatures and beautiful fall color. Kansas City is a festival city and a large number of events take place in the fall," said Alan Carr, director of communications for the Kansas City Convention & Visitors Association.

EVENTS
One massive Kansas City event, The American Royal, runs throughout the fall season and includes horse shows, rodeos and concerts. A barbecue weekend spices things up Oct. 4-7.

"The American Royal Barbecue has hundreds of people competing for the best barbecue in the Midwest," Young said. "You can walk around and sample different food, drinks and listen to live music."

For all ye nerds and nerdettes, the Kansas City Renaissance Festival is a jolly good time. Running weekends through Oct. 14, the festival features daily jousting and performances of song, dance and comedy. "Jenny Coon Peterson
