Kit Kittredge: An American Girl

Reviewer's grade: C+

Abigail Breslin ("Little Miss Sunshine") stars as Kit Kittredge, a ten-year-old girl living in 1934 Cincinnati. Kit lives a perfect life hanging out in her tree house, pursuing her dream of becoming a reporter. Then the Great Depression hits home, her dad (Chris O'Donnell, "Grey's Anatomy") loses his job and has to leave town to find work, and Kit's mother (Julia Ormond,  "Surveillance") has to take in boarders and sell eggs to keep the house.

What follows is a sort of melodramatic adventure/mystery, complete with a twist that will only surprise its target audience. But despite a promising supporting cast that includes Stanley Tucci, Joan Cusack, Jane Krakowski and Wallace Shawn and a script that begs for broad, goofy performances, director Patricia Rozema ("Mansfield Park") somehow sucks all the fun out of the project, leaving us with a kid movie that feels about as fun as a BBC production of "Measure for Measure."

"Kit Kittredge: An American Girl " isn't terrible, just forgettable. G
