Oklahoma sunsets are known for their beauty and are just the thing that captivates one local artist.

Painter Dean Wyatt's "Waiting for the Moon" exhibit is on display at the Governor's Gallery at the state Capitol, 2101 N. Lincoln. Wyatt creates what he calls dusky, yet colorful pieces that come together as a landscape representing the basic elements of fire, earth, wind and water. However, instead of flowers and trees, he focuses more on the aspect of twilight and the crossover of night and day.

Although most recognize his paintings as landscapes, Wyatt said he doesn't think of himself as a landscape painter.

"The transition from day to night has a nebulous quality I find fascinating," he said. "There is beauty accompanied by darker undertones. The sun is gone. Distortion creeps in. Land merges into sky. Familiar objects dissolve. And the day succumbs to night."

Wyatt is a self-taught artist from Duncan who currently lives in Owasso. He has served as the president of the Tulsa Artists' Coalition, and his paintings can be regularly seen at Tulsa galleries.

The exhibit is on display from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, until June 6. For more information, visit arts.ok.gov. "?Luke Atkinson
