Mercy Health Center hosts three-day health camp

In its 10th year of operation, Mercy Health Center's Mercy Kidfit Health Camp is shaping up to be a summer activity that not only keeps youngsters busy, but also keeps them focused on living healthy, active lives.

This three-day health camp will teach children about the positive effects of healthy nutrition and regular exercise. Learning about foods that help their bodies grow and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle as they get older, children will start building the foundation for a lifetime of strong living.

The Kidfit camp focuses on creating a fun learning environment for children from kindergarten through fifth grade by incorporating games like the Nutrition Scavenger Hunt, preparing kid chef-friendly meals and teaching exercises and yoga.

Dietitian Lori Manning teaches the camp along with four University of Central Oklahoma nutrition interns. She said that in addition to providing nutrition information, Kidfit stresses the importance of swapping out screen time in front of the television or computer for more lively activities like jump rope or hopscotch.

"The main goal for this age group is just to talk to them about 'growing' foods and how important nutrition is as far as keeping their body healthy, taking care of their body and to get them excited about eating healthy," Manning said.

Mercy's Kidfit Health Camp will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 6 at the Mercy Conference Center, 4300 W. Memorial. Cost is $45 per child. To enroll or for more information, call 752-3087.
