It's times like this we need those enlightened messages more than ever, and yet, they’re exceedingly harder to find. Enter MilitantxMindz, a collective of “artists, freedom fighters and poets” who are starting a revolution right here in Oklahoma.
And the revolution sounds pretty damn good.
"Rebel Life" is right on par with the most choice selections of Mos Def and Talib Kweli; it's a soulful, gripping anthem that sounds like it was born out of Bed-Stuy, not the Sooner State. The Eastern-influenced "Exodus" shows shades of Eminem and Wu-Tang Clan, while "Compromise" and the title track recall modern tastemaker Kendrick Lamar.
There's nary a miss on #RIOT, and it's the sort of thoughtful product that doesn't sound like it could have been recorded in this decade or this state, but I'm sure glad it was. —Joshua Boydston
