MonsterQuest: The Complete Season One

2008

For all those intrigued by recent rumors of giant killer octopi swimming in Oklahoma lakes, "MonsterQuest" is a television series made just for you. The History Channel production's debut season of 14 episodes is collected among four DVDs, packaged in a nice tin.

Despite the admittedly B-movie title, the show takes its subject seriously, even when that subject may be, oh, mutant canines. Each hour-long program is devoted to a different mythical creature, from ol' standbys like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster to more recent legends like Russia's "killer apemen" and the avian menace "Birdzilla."

With narration from Stan Bernard, the show interviews purported witnesses to the various beast sightings, cryptozoologists who remain healthily skeptical and scientists who examine the evidence. Rather than laugh at the conspiracy theorists, "Monster Quest" lets them simply tell their side, which is admirable "¦ although it doesn't always make the proceedings as much fun as they could be.

Graphics and animations in each episode are exemplary, in the absence of honest-to-God footage of the (assumedly) urban legends.
