Museum celebrates 35th anniversary of art exhibition

Now through Sept. 7, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum celebrates the 35th anniversary of the "Prix de West Invitational Art Exhibition," a show featuring the works of the country's contemporary Western artists.

With more than 300 paintings and sculptures by some of today's most talented and renowned Western artists, the exhibit truly captures the character of the Old West. Depicting the ways of life in the territory as well as the natural beauty of the West, "Prix de West" allows viewers to get a full scope of the life in a once-untouched region in the United States.

"There are few places that give art enthusiasts the opportunity to see a vast amount of this amazing art," said Shayla Simpson, director of public relations and museum events. "The scope of Western art for this show is much broader than most realize in that it is not just 'cowboy' art; it is landscapes, wildlife, sculptures, Native American and Western life and so much more. The 'Prix de West' encompasses so much of our heritage in one exhibit."

The exhibit's paintings depict a range of subjects. From portraying the scene of a family's fireside story time to painting the natural majesty of the Vernal and Nevada Falls in landscapes, the show takes viewers back in time to experience the beauty of the West.

The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, 1700 N.E. 63rd, is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For more information, call 478-2250.
