The inaugural Athena Girls' Camp for girls ages 6-12 aims to:
" encourage knowledge,
" emphasize communication and confidence, and
" inspire girls to make a difference in their communities.
The four-day camp will run 8:30-11:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday, June 15, at Junior Achievement's Omniplex headquarters, 2100 N.E. 52nd.
THEMES
The camp's day themes include:
" "I'm an Action Star: Healthy Lifestyle Choices,"
" "Smart Is Cool: Internet Safety and Manners,"
" "I Am Who I Am: Individual Expression," and
" "When I Grow Up: Work Ethic, Teamwork and Money Management."
Girls can show their creativity with writing, art, acting and music activities, and learn about career possibilities from leading women professionals.
Malena Lott, founder of Athena Institute, said the camp "really focuses on the individual and learning about themselves in all of these different areas, from how to make a nutritious snack "¦ to how can I be more open-minded about diversity."
Local experts from a variety of fields will educate girls on:
" health,
" individuality,
" women's work and
" education.
The camp will include up to 200 girls and several adult women volunteers who will teach girls how to embrace smart choices in all areas of life.
