Nice glass

A waist-high tympani drum. Instead of hitting the drum, you hit a foot pedal that will make sound and illuminate the instrument with light. Blue, red and yellow are a few of the colors dancing on the beautiful surface of this glass drum.

Yes, glass. With an opening reception from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, “Cutting Edge” is an edgy exhibit with diverse freestanding and wall-mounted objects at JRB Art at The Elms, 2810 N. Walker.

“Most glass is shown on a pedestal,” said Joy Reed Belt, gallery director. “They were looking for glass that is very innovative and that can be displayed in different ways.”

The exhibit features 14 artists from all over the world. Ten of them were chosen by a jury seeking pieces that are more challenging and atypical.

“Glass is a material, and there are different ways to use glass — you can blow and fuse,” Belt said. “We were looking nationally for artists more nontraditional.”

Some pieces fuse glass with wood, ceramics and metal to create a more modern and sometimes abstract piece for visitors to admire.

“Cutting Edge” will remain on display through Aug. 27. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
