Nonprofit group plans fund-raiser to benefit military families

For many military families, everyday burdens become the toughest battles.

Join Oklahoma Operation Homefront on Saturday for a fund-raiser and benefit event filled with live music, darts, pool and cage dancing.

The Lonzo Dog Band opens for Todd Terrill & Hard Core Country, who will headline an 8 p.m. performance at the Sooner Corral, 10300 S. Sooner. Show-goers must be 18 or over.

Event coordinator Kendall Davis described Terrill's band as having red dirt roots, which has evolved to incorporate an eclectic mix of country styles.

The Disabled American Veterans will present the color guard between sets, Davis said.

NATIONAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION
Operation Homefront is a national nonprofit organization with 34 state chapters devoted to aiding military families and spouses during deployment, as well as returned wounded veterans.

The grassroots organization was founded in 2002 by a soldier's spouse who saw a void of support for military families. The group regularly organizes e-care packages, arranges group support for spouses and helps provide auto repair for military families. The Oklahoma chapter was started in December 2007 by Gina Griffiths from Lawton.

Raising awareness for this "worthy mission and for the organization to become involved with local troops, their families, and veterans," is a goal of Griffiths, as stated in a press release.

All proceeds from the $15 concert will benefit the Oklahoma chapter. For tickets and more information, call 470-0295. "Natalie Burkey
