Occupy OKC memorial set for deceased man

Called “The Poet,” 18-year-old Louis Cameron Rodriguez was found dead Nov. 1 in his tent at the Occupy OKC protests, said Beth Isbell, a moderator for outreach workgroup for Occupy OKC.

The cause of death has yet to be determined.

Rodriguez was positively identified from a video posted online, Isbell said. The group is paying for Rodriguez’s mother to fly to Oklahoma City on Saturday to attend the service. His mother and sister live in Clarksville, Tenn.

People are encouraged to share their stories of the young man and how he touched their lives.

Before the service Saturday, there will be a free concert in the park. From 4 to 6 p.m., rock pianist Tara Dillard will perform at the Kerr Park amphitheater. Oklahoma City attorney Rex Friend will also conduct a civil disobedience workshop from 3 to 5 p.m.

“Part of the music, is really in honor of him because he was involved in kind of a rhythmic poetry,” said Mark Faulk, media workgroup moderator for Occupy OKC.

A more intimate memorial was held for the homeless man earlier in the week, but Saturday’s memorial is open to the public, Faulk said.

“It was more just people sharing what they knew about him,” Faulk said. “The one the other day was, frankly, very emotional because he touched a lot of people here in a very short period of time.”

The service will be followed by a community dinner.

“He seemed to have just awakened in the last few weeks,” Faulk said. “The occupation gave him meaning.”

A PayPal memorial fund has been set up by entering the email address "reformokc@gmail.com" at the “send money” link or by calling 719-661-6871.
