OCU kicks off 57th season with 'Footloose'

Oklahoma City University kicks off its Sunday shoes "? and its 57th season of opera and music theater "? by staging the dance musical "Footloose" this weekend.

Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday, at OCU's Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Center, 2501 N. Blackwelder.

The two-hour musical, directed by David Herendeen, is performed and staged entirely by UCO students, and includes a 30-piece orchestra. Herendeen said many of the songs made popular by the Oscar-nominated Eighties film are brought to the stage through numbers created specifically for the musical theater adaptation.

"Footloose"'s source material is the 1984 Kevin Bacon movie of the same name, which was inspired by real-life events involving high school students in Elmore City.

OCU students Brent Goble and Ian Gibb take turns starring as Ren McCormick, the new kid in town who stirs things up in small town Bomont. Angered by the town council's decision to ban dancing and rock music "? "no dancing of any kind, is allowed at anytime, anywhere, within the town limits" "? he rallies the youth, stages a coup and tries to save the senior prom.

Ren's biggest obstacle is Rev. Shaw Moore, a pious man determined to control the town's youth, but unable to corral his rebellious daughter, Ariel, played by Katie Martin and Katelyn Sooter.

The high school drama quickly unfolds as Ariel falls for Ren, a situation made musically dramatic, courtesy of her jealous boyfriend.

Choreographed to hits like "Hurts So Good," "Dancing in the Sheets," "Almost Paradise" and "Let's Hear It for the Boy," good things are bound to happen when you cut loose, footloose.

Tickets are $10-$25. For more information, call 208-5227. "?Natalie Burkey
