Oklahoma athletic department official sends out 'absurd' e-mail

E-mail can sometimes be evil. Once the send button is pressed on the keyboard, there's no return.

One of the University of Oklahoma's athletic department public relations specialists learned that lesson. Most fans of women's college basketball know how dominant OU's Courtney Paris is on the court. Since arriving in Norman three years ago, she has shattered nearly every record at OU and in the Big 12 conference, and several national records, as well.

Each week during basketball season, the Big 12 names its "Player of the Week," and Paris has certainly been a frequent-flier for this accolade. But, when Danielle Gant of Texas A&M was given the honor for games played Feb. 18-24, Jared Thompson with OU Athletics Media Relations didn't hold back on his displeasure with Paris not getting the nod. Thompson sent out an e-mail to the press Feb. 25 under the subject heading "Courtney Paris Not Big 12 WBB Player of the Week?"

Here's the actual wording from the sent e-mail: "No disrespect to Danielle Gant's accomplishments, but this week's Big 12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week voting was absurd. "¦ Apparently, setting two conference records and totaling more points and rebounds than any other player in the league isn't enough."

It seems Thompson was just a wee bit ticked. Well, it took exactly 30 minutes for him to send out another e-mail.

"I apologize for describing the voting of the Big 12 WBB Player of the Week vote as 'absurd' and thank those of you who were upset by the statement," Thompson wrote.

That's nice.

"I realize this is very unprofessional and let a moment of frustration take over my emotions," he continued.

"The point I was attempting to make, rather poorly, was that too often Courtney Paris has been overly deserving of the award and has either been dismissed or has had to share the honor. This is rather difficult to explain when nominating players for national awards when they can only win their conference player of the week award once the whole season."  -Gazette staff
