Oklahoma City company wins City of Tulsa bid to clean

That headline would normally be something found in the sports section of a newspaper, like when the Oklahoma City Blazers clean up the Tulsa Oilers in hockey.

But no " this has to do with streets and brooms.

Last week, the Tulsa City Council was considering where to award a contract for providing downtown services, including cleaning the sidewalks and streets, mowing grass, picking up trash and various landscaping duties. There were several vendors to choose from, including Tulsa's own Downtown Tulsa Unlimited and Lot Maintenance of Oklahoma, according to the Tulsa World.

The two companies, being from Tulsa, would seem to have the inside track. Not so fast, my friends!

When it came time to vote on a contract, the lucky winner for cleaning up T-Town trash went to an Oklahoma City company. United Sweepers and Cleaners claimed the $223,227 contract, according to the Tulsa World. It was the lowest bid the Tulsa City Council considered.

There are two ways to look at this. Most folks are familiar with the OKC-Tulsa rivalry that has existed for decades but is about as meaningful as a hip-hop concert in Durant. So Tulsans could say the only thing OKC is worth is picking up their trash.

On the other hand, Oklahoma City patrons could shout back that Tulsans are so backward they need our help to clean themselves.

In any case, this makes another nice chapter in the Tulsa-Oklahoma City "boredlam" (y'know, like "bedlam," but with less excitement or relevancy) rivalry.
