Oklahoma Gazette wins big at 2018 Society of Professional Journalism awards

Oklahoma Gazette posted several wins, including two first-place awards for reporting and a second-place overall award in the Newspaper A bracket at the 2018 Society of Professional Journalists Oklahoma Pro Chapter awards, presented May 19 at Doubletree Warren Place in Tulsa.
Laura Eastes won first place in the general news reporting category for “391 percent loans,” her in-depth look at how the payday loan industry impacts Oklahoma City residents. In addition, Eastes won first place in the business reporting category for “Blurred lines,” a post-mortem on Tate Publishing and Enterprises, whose founders were charged with multiple counts of embezzlement in 2017.
Ben Luschen and Jacob Threadgill were honored together and separately for their excellent work in 2017. While Oklahoma Gazette does not cover sports on a weekly basis, Luschen and Threadgill’s reporting and analysis of Oklahoma City Thunder’s impact on the city won third place in the sports feature category.
Luschen won second place for “Morning glory,” his portrait of Oklahoma City music legend Miss Blues in the entertainment feature competition, and Threadgill racked up a third-place win for “Veggie embrace,” his profile of The Red Cup chef Patrick Clark and his successful revamp of the eatery’s vegetarian-friendly menu.
Finally, Oklahoma Gazette won second place overall in the best newspaper category. The OKG staff is proud of these 2017 achievements and will continue to provide sharp reporting and valuable insight throughout 2018 and beyond, and we thank our readers for continuing to value strong community journalism.
