Oklahoma senator flip flops position on war

First, he was for the war. Now, he says it was a mistake. This would normally sound like an attack from a Republican against one of those namby-pamby Democrats who has changed his or her mind about the war in Iraq.

But, hold on. It turns out this is not a case of a yellow-spined Demo, who is simply reading poll numbers. No, this change from hawk to dove comes from none other than Oklahoma's freshman Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Muskogee.

The Tulsa World reported Oklahoma's junior Republican senator spit those words out during a town hall meeting in Muskogee. "I will tell you personally that I think it was probably a mistake going to Iraq," the World quoted Coburn saying at the meeting.

Tom Coburn said that? Our Tom Coburn? Mr. I'm More Conservative Than George W. Bush At A Revival said the Iraq war was probably a mistake? Somebody check to see if the fridge is still in the kitchen or sliding down to purgatory.

As the story pointed out, Coburn took no back seat to proclaiming the war as a just cause when he ran for the Senate in 2004, reportedly saying then it was "absolutely not" a mistake.

When the Tulsa World reporters asked Coburn what changed his mind, the often-easy-to-quote Coburn all of sudden had no comment. But a fellow Republican senator from the Sooner State had a quote on the Iraq war take. Coburn's comments reportedly surprised Sen. James Inhofe, R-Tulsa.

"No, no, he couldn't have said that," Inhofe told the World.

"I cannot believe he said that."

A few minutes later, Inhofe said he disagreed with Coburn.

It's hard to say how effective Coburn has been at representing Oklahoma in Congress. But, man, is he great for news copy. We at Chicken-Fried News hope Coburn gets a lifetime appointment to the Senate. Democrats may not like it, but our pages will never go blank with him around.
