Coinciding with the state's centennial celebration, the Central Oklahoma chapter of the American Institute of Architects has compiled a list of the 100 most architecturally significant buildings in Central Oklahoma.
The buildings, their history and locations are featured in a new book, "Celebrate 100: An Architectural Guide to Central Oklahoma."
CRITERIA
A committee of 10 architects and historians spent most of 2006 deciding which buildings should make the list and which ones didn't cut it. The decisions were based on seven criteria, of which a building had to meet at least one:
" excellence in design,
" representative of the work of an influential architect,
" representative of a characteristic period in this area,
" contributing to an important neighborhood or district,
" part of a significant ensemble of buildings,
" attracting public attention and
" interest or noteworthy eccentricity.
Melissa Hunt, executive director of the Central Oklahoma AIA, said several buildings met more than one criterion, and that coming up with the list was a difficult task.
"We had to narrow down to 100, but we also wanted to show architecture examples around the state," Hunt said. "While there may have been some buildings that met the criteria here in Oklahoma City, we didn't want all the buildings to be from Oklahoma City."
