Poetry slams, reading help keep art form alive in metro

While Oklahoma has produced its share of poetic legends, many people may not realize that Oklahoma City is a highly recognized outlet for the celebration of poetry as an art, through increasingly popular poetry readings at Galileo Bar and Grill, 3009 Paseo.

Galileo is the site for weekly readings from the metro-based Home for Wayward Poets, a nonprofit poetry group, committed to maintaining and preserving various forms of performance art, music and literature in Oklahoma since 1998.

The group includes several poets who volunteer their time to help promote the lost art of poetry throughout the metro, marking 2008 as the 10th anniversary for one of the largest weekly reading sessions in the nation.

STIMULATION
Tracy Townsend, Individual Artists of Oklahoma poetry committee chair, said their monthly poetry slams are not only a unique and stimulating way to get involved in the community, but introduce individuals to the diverse and enriching skill of the poetic art form.

"The poetry slams require poets to write for the masses, making it understandable for the general audience. The slams are highly interactive, encouraging the audience to truly get involved during the actual performances," Townsend said. "They are a great way to meet interesting, intellectual people, in a positive and thought-provoking environment."
