Red Dirt Rangers return to stage annual kids' holiday concert

Oklahoma roots-country band The Red Dirt Rangers is no stranger to beer-soaked music halls and rowdy crowds throughout the region, but for more than a decade, the trio has donated stage time for a tamer, though no less festive, holiday performance in Oklahoma City.

The band's 15th Annual Kids' Christmas Show is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at The Blue Door, 2805 N. McKinley.

Mandolin player John Cooper said the band, which recorded a children's album in 1995, long has played to younger crowds and family shows.

"The kids that first came out are starting to show up to see us at clubs," Cooper said, laughing. "It's kind of freaky."

AGENDA
The band's Christmas show " which features cookies, punch and holiday decorations " is always on a Sunday, always at The Blue Door and usually a sellout, Cooper said.

"Christmas is really about kids, and we wanted to help celebrate," Cooper said. "And they really have a great time at the show, and their parents always love it. Some drop them off and use the time to get some last-minute shopping done."

Children make for great audiences, and the band members enjoy playing traditional holiday songs kids can sing along to, he said.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased online. For more information, call 524-0738.
