Rep. Boren not seeking re-election in 2012

Spokesman Cole Perryman confirmed reports that the conservative Democrat plans to retire.

The representative for Oklahoma’s 2nd Congressional District that covers 24 counties in eastern Oklahoma and serves as the state’s Democratic stronghold, Boren is the only Democrat of the state’s five congressional representatives.

Following in the footsteps of his politician father, former U.S. Senator and current University of Oklahoma President David Boren, Dan Boren left the Oklahoma state House to run for congressional office. He was first elected to Congress in 2004, and was re-elected three more times, in 2006, 2008 and 2010.

A prominent member of the House’s moderate Blue Dog Coalition, Boren also became ranking member in the 112th Congress’ Subcommittee on Indian and Alaskan Native Affairs  in late January.

His predecessor in the House, former Democratic Rep. Brad Carson, also announced plans to reclaim the seat today.

Boren’s press conference will take place at the Brackeen Seminar Center, Building C, 2403 N. 41st St. East. —Alex Ewald
