Sage will celebrate its first year in Deep Deuce on Saturday with the debut of a month-long jazz series in its newly opened music lounge.

The performances will stage each Saturday in May at the Sage Lounge, a venue opening next door to the downtown restaurant/bar and boutique grocer. The weekly show will feature local jazz artists, like the Taylor Made Jazz band, which helps kick off the inaugural concert at 7 p.m.

"We're bringing jazz back to the Deep Deuce," said band member and event organizer Walter Taylor.

He worked with Sage's owners, Kevin and Charifa Smith, to plan the program. Taylor said he proposed the series to showcase talented local musicians.

"It's something that we thought we needed," he said, adding that, other than the University of Central Oklahoma's Jazz Lab in Edmond and a few other places, there's a lack of metro venues for "high-level" jazz.

Taylor said Sage Lounge, 228 N.E. Second, is the "ideal" spot for such shows because of its location in Deep Deuce, a historic district known, in part, for being the one-time stomping grounds of jazz legend Charlie Christian. The site's size is also ideal for intimate jazz shows, he said.

"It's perfect for what, I think, we all have talked about," he said.

Taylor hopes that the Sage Lounge grows to catch the attention of jazz musicians traveling between Kansas City and Dallas. Several performers, including Carl Moore, Maurice Johnson, Morris McCraven and Garrett "Big G" Jacobson, will perform Saturday's anniversary show. The concerts are free, but reservations are recommended.
