Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History hosts scavenger hunt

The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History has created a scavenger hunt for kids to help them find the artistic beauty within the exhibits.

In "Picturing Oklahoma," kids can choose a gallery within any of the exhibits to learn about the state's past and present history. The list includes clues and specific graphics and photos to look for, as opposed to looking at the diorama as a whole, said museum spokeswoman Linda Coldwell.

"It's a way of kind of looking past the objects and look at the art that supports them," she said. "It's a way for parents and kids to interact with the exhibit."

Along with looking at the exhibits with a little more detail, Coldwell said the hunt will help kids develop an appreciation for the artists. In the "Drawing the Mot Mot" exhibit, the hunt focuses on artist Debby Kaspari, who draws her interpretation of tropical nature in the Central and South American rainforests. The exhibit includes videos of her drawing process of various birds, along with her finished pieces.

Coldwell said many of the murals and artwork within the exhibits were designed to blend in to the diorama, and "Picturing Oklahoma" allows children to find the art they might otherwise pass by without noticing.

"I think people look at the exhibits and take the illustrations for granted," she said.

Kids can participate in "Picturing Oklahoma" any time during the Discovery Room hours: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday; 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday; and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for children and free for children under 5. The scavenger hunt runs through Dec. 31 at the museum, 2401 Chautauqua in Norman.
