With the start of school quickly approaching, it's probably a good idea to start warming kids back up to the idea of learning. Visiting Science Museum Oklahoma's newest exhibit, "Destination Space," is a great way to blend amusement with education, leaving kids ever the wiser on all things intergalactic.
The exhibit takes a close look at the preparations needed and challenges faced when planning to orbit space. From escaping the gravitational forces of the earth and developing rockets to using laws of physics to prepare for life in another world, this exhibit educates visitors on all preliminary aspects of a space flight.
"'Destination Space' is definitely a unique space exhibit. It contains hands-on exhibits as well as space artifacts that combine to place the significance of the human understanding of space exploration," said Shaundra North, Science Museum Oklahoma communications coordinator.
Divided into four galleries " "Space Rules," "Dwell in Space," "Voyages" and "Launch Pad" " the exhibit incorporates interactive sections that let children test different physics laws, experiment with gadgets and gauge their own astronaut skills.
"The 'Voyages' gallery also includes a Mercury capsule simulator that simulates the first American astronaut's flight of Freedom 7 into space on May 5, 1961," North said. "Adults and kids can take a ride in the simulator!"
"Destination Space" is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Science Museum Oklahoma, 2100 N.E. 52nd. For more information, call 602-6664.
