More than 60 nonprofit and volunteer groups advocating for human rights, sustainability and peace will converge at the 24th annual Fall Peace Festival, hosted by The Peace House.

Since its inception, the event has evolved into a day of celebration and awareness, as well as a shopping bazaar, said Nathaniel Batchelder, Peace House director.

"People can do a lot of holiday shopping here," Batchelder said. "It's a good way to support some great organizations."

Participants can purchase goods from around the globe, including pottery, textiles, coffee and clothing " all available as Fair Trade items, which is merchandise meeting specific criteria in the production process that affords artisans just prices for their labor.

Along with the bazaar, organizations will inform attendees of issues affecting the global community. Many of these organizations work year-round in support of their respective movements, ranging from saving the environment to abolishing the death penalty. As a result, the festival serves as a celebration of their labor, Batchelder said.

"Working for nonprofits is not the business you enter to get rich," he said. "These people are working for what they believe in. This is a time to celebrate their efforts."

During the festivities, Jahruba and Steve McClinn will provide live musical performances. Kids will have the opportunity to create and add their own leaves to the Peace Tree, along with other activities in the children's area.

The Fall Peace Festival is slated from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Hall of Mirrors inside Civic Center Music Hall, 201 N. Walker. Admission is free. Call 524-5577 or visit www.peacehouseok.org. "Ta'Chelle Jones
