While Republicans want Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor to fork over more records before confirmation hearings begin July 13, Sen. Tom Coburn recently met with Obama's pick for a "philosophical discussion," according to The Oklahoman.
What did they discuss? Do tell!
"General stuff," Coburn, a Judiciary Committee member, told The Oke. "What she likes, what she doesn't like. It was more a philosophical discussion (about) life, problems in our country, difficulties we face."
Coburn reportedly described Sotomayor as "a bright lady, very smart and (a) well-coached" nominee.
"We still have a lot of issues to look at," Coburn told The Oke. "She's got the demeanor of a judge."
And what about Sen. Jim Inhofe? Although it's customary for senators to meet individually with nominees, Inhofe reportedly declined an invitation. He's already on record that he plans to vote against confirming Sotomayor. Inhofe opposed her nomination to her
current post in 1998.
"That was a foregone conclusion," Inhofe told the Tulsa World of his decision. "If you voted against anyone on the circuit (court), I have never been able to see how you turn around when the bar is actually higher and support it at a higher level.
"She stated in different times of her career that she believes that circuit courts should be making policy and not just interpreting the law as it exists."
And Jim expects Sotomayor to be confirmed to the Supreme Court because GOP leaders are afraid to vote against a Latina nominee.
"She will be definitely confirmed," Inhofe told the World. "I'm predicting half the Republicans at least will end up supporting her who might not otherwise because of these things I just mentioned."
