Students sought for free transportation industry program

The application deadline is approaching for Oklahoma high school students interested in participating in a free summer program highlighting the transportation industry, June 1-26.

Hosted by Langston University, the four-week, residential Summer Transportation Institute will introduce students to transportation modes and careers through:
" field trips,
" hands-on activities and
" presentations.

The application deadline is Feb. 22. Especially urged to apply are students who are:
" female,
" minorities,
" economically disadvantaged or
" with disabilities.

GOAL
The goal of the program, according to Project Director Kay Wachtstetter, is to get high schoolers turned on to developing math, science and technology skills necessary for pursuing careers in the transportation industry, before graduating.

"(The U.S. Department of Transportation) is facing a mass retirement of the baby boomer generation," she said. "From its inception, the purpose of this program was to interest students from all under-represented groups in preparing for careers in the transportation industry in order to fill the vacated positions."

Program highlights include a field trip to Texas for tours of:
" NASA,
" a BNSF railroad operations center and
" a Peterbilt manufacturing plant.

Activities also cover:
" ACT preparation,
" computer skills,
" time management and
" team building.

ELIGIBILITY
The program is open to spring semester ninth- and 10th-graders making at least a 2.5 GPA. Up to 20 participants will be awarded a $400 stipend upon completion. Covered are:
" dorm housing,
" meals,
" travel,
" activities and
" entertainment costs.

About 140 Oklahoma students have participated in the program, now in its eighth year, Wachtstetter said.
