Super Friends: The Lost Episodes

2009

Back in the days when Saturday morning meant cartoons, one stood above all the others for me: "Super Friends." In its various incarnations throughout the 1970s and 1980s, its colorful superhero stories remained the highlight of my weekly, cereal-abetted ritual.

The double-disc set "Super Friends: The Lost Episodes" rounds up two dozen adventures that originally went unaired and haven't been seen for more than a decade. But worry not "? it's still the same show you know and love: that rah-rah theme song, feats of derring-do and lots of costumed good guys ... yeah, including those Wonder Twins.

Not only is the team comprised of household names like Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Green Lantern, but also the politically correct minority additions of Apache Chief, Black Vulcan, Samurai and El Dorado. Together and separate, at the behest of the "Trouble Alert," they embark on many seven-minute adventures, which include defeating the wreckage of the Titanic, which has essentially turns into the shark from "Jaws"; upsetting an American Indian poltergeist; dimension-slipping into a prehistoric world; rounding up giant alien babies; fighting their evil clones; encountering cat people; and getting stuck inside a Bizarro World video game.

All in all, it's great nostalgic fun that holds up. That goes for a 24-page comic book of "Super Friends #1" in the special features "? you can click through it onscreen or download it to your desktop.
