That new car smell

Audi reported sales of 7,812 cars and SUVs in January, up 20 percent from the previous January. It also surpassed that month’s sales record, set in 2010 with 6,510 vehicles sold. This month’s results continue Audi’s strongest sales year in the U.S., grabbing 8.6 percent of the market at the close of 2010.

Chrysler’s January marked its 10th consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases, with a 23 percent jump and sales of 70,118. Sales for its Jeep Grand Cherokee model were up a whopping 130 percent over January 2010.

Ford, meanwhile, reported a 2010 net income of $6.6 billion, a $3.8 billion increase over 2009. Its fourth-quarter net income, however, decreased sharply from $696 million in 2009 to $190 million. The auto company said debt conversion was the reason for the drop. —Gazette staff
