The Adventures of Daniel Boom aka Loud Boy: Sound Off! - D.J. Steinberg and Brian Smith

Grosset & Dunlap

A new series of graphic novels aimed at ages 9 to 12 kicks off with "The Adventures of Daniel Boom aka Loud Boy: Sound Off!," written by animation producer D.J. Steinberg and illustrated by Brian Smith.

Essentially an origin tale, the book introduces us to Daniel Boom, who was born with "no indoor voice," thanks to some freak purple lightning hitting the hospital at the moment of his arrival. Everything he says causes the glass around him to break, forcing his parents to move out of town to a more isolated locale.

Turns out, Daniel's curse is a gift when a mad scientist known as Old Fogey plots to silence all the world's children for good. In the process, Daniel not only defeats the villain (you didn't expect otherwise, did you?), but gains several new powered pals for the next adventure, "Mac Attack," due in August.

"Sound Off!" is too kid-centric for adults, but its target audience will be drawn to its bright colors, slapstick humor and theme of kids overpowering elders.
