The Exorcist: The Complete Anthology

1973/1977/1990/2000/2004/2005/2006

One of the scariest flicks of all time, "The Exorcist" was more than a box-office blockbuster. It was a touchstone of pop culture. The macabre tale of a sweet-faced 12-year-old girl possessed by the devil signaled a new level of intensity for horror movies and spurred scores of lesser imitators that heaped on the gore.

If you need more proof of the appeal of the "Exorcist" franchise, look no further. The 1973 movie inspired a retooled 2000 version, two sequels and two prequels "? all of which are gathered in this six-DVD collection.

Unless you're a diehard completist (or an exorcist yourself) this might be more possession than you need to possess. The original is a classic, of course, and its revamped 2000 version is worthwhile. "The Exorcist III" and "Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist" have their creepy charm. But the anthology includes two notorious clunkers, the laughably awful "Exorcist II: The Heretic" and the overwrought "Exorcist: The Beginning."
