The great teachers are

In the Gazette article Headed to Class (News, Sarah Clough Chamber, Sept. 29), we find, "Those interested in teaching can expect to put in a lot of time and money into getting certified "¦"

Any expert in a particular discipline and able to educate a student in that discipline should be allowed to do so without regard to attending a teaching college or taking any kind of certification test.

If we had school choice in the form of vouchers or tax credits, parents could direct their progeny to any school/teacher. Word would spread quickly as to who's doing a good job teaching and who isn't, and the mediocre and poorly skilled would be seeking other employment quickly. The remaining teachers would be true professionals with salaries to match and the bloated bureaucracy and the unions would atrophy.

I live across the street from the Classen School of Advanced Studies; and I can tell you who the great teachers are; they arrive around 6 a.m. and don't leave after the last bell.
