The Mole Man of Belmont Avenue

Co-directors/co-writers/co-producers Mike Bradecich and John LaFlamboy also co-star as the Mugg brothers, slackers who run the crappy abode where a mole man (Justin DiGiacomo) lurks the halls for dogs and cats to consume, before moving up the food chain to humans. Any ingenuity begins and ends with the title; Bradecich and LaFlamboy mug(g) their way through lines that either aren't written funny or aren't delivered as such — either way, they're to blame. It all has the desperate stench of a Kickstarter project, whether or not that's the case.

Today's young, budding screenwriters — Bradecich and LaFlamboy included — must be using some Kevin Smith version of Final Draft that inserts “fuck” and “fucking” randomly and frequently throughout the script. I've said it before and, unfortunately, I'm sure I'll say it again, but a reliance on F-bombs for punch lines does not equal wit. It equals laziness, on par with tenant T.J. Jagodowski's insufferable Steve Zahn imitation.

Says a cop to his partner about the Mugg boys, “You know what? I don't like these two.” Nor do I. To be fair, I'm only basing my opinion on Mole Man, which might amuse only those who are high, but I'd hope even they would exercise better judgment. —Rod Lott
