Granted, the city up the turnpike would be the smallest to host the ancient games in the modern era.

Its BOK Center and new baseball stadium are certainly nifty, but the infrastructure and hotel accommodations seem mighty limited for an international event as huge as the Summer Olympics.

But, hey, Tulsa does have something any coach would love to see in an athlete: potential.

Nevertheless, just three days after The New York Times publicized the city’s heartwarming bid on its July 1 front page, Tulsa Mayor Dewey F. Bartlett Jr. withdrew his support.

In sports parlance, the guy choked. It’s difficult to see how Tulsa would reach its goal when it’s competing with itself — let alone the world — for the bid. But it makes for a great game.
