The X-Files / 30 Days of Night #1

Marry "The X-Files" with "30 Days of Night"? The concept is so "duh," one wonders why it didn't happen sooner.

Horror scribe extraordinaire Steve Niles, the creator of "30 Days," guides this six-issue miniseries for WildStorm, with art by Tom Mandrake. In the first issue, naturally, FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully travel to the sleepy Alaskan town of Wainwright to investigate a bizarre murder.

Make that murders, plural, as 16 decapitated bodies are found atop a pole by a local trucker. Their heads rest comfortably in the snow below. Given the "30 Days" half of the equation, we know it's vampires at work, but Mulder and Scully don't. Who cares if there's no mystery to the reader? Any "X-Files" is better than no "X-Files."

This issue's all about setup, with the fright aspect not kicking in until the final page, suggesting the series is all pedal-to-the-metal from here. "?Rod Lott
