Tinker hosts U.S. Air Force Thunderbird at weekend show

Get ready for a display of white-knuckle maneuvering and daring midair choreography " featuring the world-famous U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds " at Saturday's 11th annual Star Spangled Salute air show at Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City. It's for the entire family, not just jet nuts.

With free admission, parking at the General Motors plant and complimentary shuttle services at the base, there's no excuse not to check out the show, especially with the awesome pyrotechnics during the evening showcase "Twilight on the Tarmac," presented by OG&E. Who wouldn't enjoy explosive demonstrations featuring an AV-8 Harrier (a first-time appearance at the show) and the F-15 Eagle, not to mention "Tora! Tora! Tora!," a detailed re-enactment and memorial of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor?

The event will take off at 9 a.m. with ground demonstrations, displays and activities for the kids, with performances continuing throughout the day. Be sure to catch Lauren Nelson, an Oklahoma native and Miss America 2007, for photo opportunities and autographs at 10 a.m.

"Twilight on the Tarmac," which begins at 5 p.m., will feature artist Richard Hight and a spectacular concert from the U.S Air Force Tops in Blue, a special unit of skilled active-duty performers.

Parking at the GM plant is available at 7477 S.E. 74th. The Lancer, Liberator and Hruskocy gates will open at 9 a.m., with handicap access at Liberator. Also, be sure to have your driver's license handy for the gate guards.
