Apparently that’s not good enough for lawmakers who have authored two bills making their way through the state Senate. KFOR reported Senate Bill 1143 and Senate Bill 1500 both passed the Senate Education Committee and are headed to the full Senate.

SB 1143 would require elementary students in public schools to recite the Pledge of Allegiance each day. SB 1500 would require the
pledge be recited by all students in public schools each day. Both bills
also include language that would not require any student to say the
pledge who didn’t want to.

So
let’s get this straight. Students say the Pledge of Allegiance in
schools now and don’t have to if they don’t want to. So to remedy that,
we need legislation that says students must say the Pledge of Allegiance
in schools and don’t have to if they don’t want to.

It’s
reassuring to know that lawmakers are hard at work at 23rd Street and
Lincoln Boulevard and not just wasting time and taxpayer money. The
authors of these bills should receive a salute for their efforts, but
only one finger will be required for that salute.
