Touch a Truck' gives kids hands-on experience with big vehicles

More than 30 vehicles ranging from garbage trucks to fire engines to a hot air balloon will fall prey to the wandering hands of children 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

That's when Mothers Offering Mothers Support hosts the third annual "Touch A Truck" event at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds, 615 E. Robinson in Norman.

"Kids are always told not to touch things, so this basically means they get to touch the trucks all they want," said Anne Barajas Harp, publicity co-chair for MOMS of Norman. "They will have the opportunity to climb on vehicles and honk horns and turn wheels and gears and ask lots of questions, and they can stay with any vehicle as long as they like."

APPRECIATION
Organizations providing the vehicles will have representatives available to answer children's questions.
The event also gives attendees a chance to recognize the many individuals whose work sometimes goes unnoticed.

"A lot of times, these are people who provide really essential services to us and we never get the opportunity to say thank you," Harp said. "(Here), people get to see the people who carry their trash and deliver their mail, and get to talk to them and show their appreciation."

A suggested $2 per child donation will support the children's section of the Norman Public Library.
