Ward 5 councilman enlists in U.S. Army National Guard

Oklahoma City Councilman Brian Walters was absent from Tuesday's city council meeting. He will miss quite a few more meetings. The Ward 5 representative has enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard and will not be back until October, according to city officials.

The last council meeting Walters attended was July 20.

Elected to the office in April 2007, Walters' district covers south central Oklahoma City. His seat will be up for election in February, and pays an annual salary of $12,000.

Walters has been a controversial figure on the council at times. He was the lone dissenter on sending MAPS 3 to a vote of the people, and actively campaigned against the measure. Recently, Walters also voted against granting a permit for the annual Gay Pride Parade on the basis of his disagreement with the homosexual lifestyle.

He operates three optical stores in Oklahoma City. "Scott Cooper
