’Tis the season to give loved ones daily reminders of the beauty of American Indian art. Tribes 131 is hosting its annual Native American Art Calendar signing, which includes two days for customers to meet the 13 creators of the 2012 edition, including Benjamin Harjo Jr. and Harvey Pratt, no strangers to the full-color calendar.

Some years, Tribes 131 owner Leslie Zinbi knows exactly whose art she wants to feature on the cover, and other years she waits until all of the submissions are in. For this edition, it’s Brent Learned’s wolf pack.

“They create works specifically for the calendar, so they have a year to work on them,” Zinbi said.

The signing has been a yearly event for nearly two decades, and part of Zinbi’s family for the past 11. When she and her mother took over the project, they changed the format of the calendar and switched to higher-quality paper and printing services.

The 13 artists will sign calendars from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the gallery, 131 24th Ave. N.W., Norman.

The 11-by-14-inch calendar costs $14.99 and also can be purchased online, but unsigned.
