Although a new state law that would allow horse slaughterhouses takes effect Nov. 1, a federal judge on Aug. 2 approved an injunction against allowing such facilities to operate in the country.
The Humane Society of the United States contends in litigation that the U.S. Department of Agriculture failed to perform a required environmental review before giving the green light for horse slaughterhouses to open.
Slaughterhouses have been planned in New Mexico, Iowa, Missouri and Tennessee, but only those in New Mexico and Iowa had passed inspection.
“We’ve won a temporary but lifesaving reprieve for horses, and it’s good news indeed that the kill boxes in New Mexico and Iowa will be empty of horses in the weeks ahead,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the
Humane Society, in a written statement.
“We’ll continue to make
arguments when our case resumes ... that these plants cannot legally
operate.”
Those environmental concerns even include the compromising of the water supply. Trust us: You don’t wanna know.
For
now, however, your drinking water is safe, and nobody will be chomping
down on Mister Ed — at least not in the U.S. of A. We can’t make any
promises, however, about that mystery “chicken” in that Chinese buffet
you’re eyeing.
