Youthful Oklahoma mayor garners media attention

It wasn't all about Palin at last week's Republican National Convention. John Tyler Hammons, the 19-year-old Republican mayor of Muskogee, got his fair share of media attention, according to a story in the Tulsa World.

Being touted as "America's youngest mayor," Hammons had media outlets from around the nation, including CNN, clamoring for his time. There was even a French network hoping to say "bonjour."

"I have done many, many interviews," Hammons was quoted as saying.

So, what do people long to know about Hammons, who has been Muskogee's mayor for about four months now?

"More than anything else, they want to know if I have a first lady," Hammons told the World. "I say the position is currently vacant, and I'm accepting applications to fill the position."

We have a feeling that position won't be vacant for very long. Ever the professional, Hammons soon moved the topic to one of a more political nature: his support for Sen. John McCain. We have to admit, it warms the cold, cynical cockles of our hearts. We only have Bucky the intern as a shining example of today's youth, and he couldn't be mayor of his dorm room, let alone an entire town.

Although Hammons said he is focusing on his position as mayor (and that the convention's networking opportunities hopefully help finance his next campaign), he has higher aspirations.

"I'd love to be governor one day," he told the World.
