Zoo's prairie dogs to sub on Groundhog Day

Wondering what Punxsutawney Phil's weather predictions are going to be for the rest of winter? Well, the original forecasting groundhog may remain in Pennsylvania, but a close relative will make an appearance on Saturday for a one-of-a-kind celebration of Groundhog Day at the Oklahoma City Zoo, 2101 N.E. 50th.

The zoo's extensive animal collection does not include groundhogs, so the prairie dogs willingly agreed as the selected "weather ambassadors." They are set to make the much-anticipated annual prophecy of whether we're in for an early spring or six more weeks of winter, based upon the appearance (or lack of) their shadow.

The 10:45 a.m. forecast will take place at the prairie dogs' habitat inside Oklahoma Trails, next to the bison yard. The event is free with regular admission to the zoo.

ACTIVITIES
The festivities will continue as the zoo's education department engages the audience in an exciting and colorful groundhog story time and craft session inside the new Oklahoma Trails theater, located next to the Nocturnal Barn.

Participants will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Global Plaza. The cost is $8 per child for ZooFriends members, $10 for nonmembers and $4 per parent. Preregistration is required.
